ADVANCED PRACTICE WEEK
with Alicia Waters & Gilda Goharian
April 30 - May 7, 2020
Rosemerryn Retreat House, Cornwall

Join myself and Gilda Goharian for two weeks of deepening into the Yoga practice. Even for seasoned teachers (sometimes especially for teachers), the practice can hit a plateau and start to feel stagnant. You might find yourself wondering, "where did the magic go?" or missing the early days when each session on your mat held so much promise and yielded so much peace. We get it! We've been there.

The good news is that plateaus aren't permanent. Often a little shift - reconnecting to your awareness, playing with new ways of moving, or simply being around a like-minded community - is all it takes to make the practice feel fresh again.

These two weeks of continuing education are designed to be just that: a refresh. A re-discovery of what made you love the Yoga practice in the first place. We'll explore some aspects of the practice that don't get a lot of "air-time" in your average studio class: mantra, chanting, yogic philosophy and lifestyle... We'll take more time with meditation and pranayama - both to experience it and then process and give meaning to those experiences. We'll approach old poses with new eyes, and incorporate some non-traditional movement (*gasp*) into our standard Vinyasa classes.

I'm getting excited just thinking about it!! Are you? Come and join us!

The material will be complementary and will build from one week to the next. We highly suggest attending both modules if your schedule allows, but if not they can be done independently.

Both modules will include:

- 6 dynamic morning practices with time for questions and breaking down concepts in a more workshop-style environment

- 6 slower meditative evening practices

- 5 group sessions exploring the subjects such as pranayama / mantra & meditation / sequencing / transitions

*Group sessions will include experiential learning, which give a chance to reflect and integrate the material we cover. These may include group or partner exercises, journaling, or other participatory activities.

Week One: Riding the Waves: Pranayama + Creative Sequencing

Arrival day is Tuesday November 27, departure day is Monday December 3.

We will dive deep into pranayama in this module, taking more time to explore breath work and Prana than is available in a typical studio class, and then weaving our findings into the physical practice. We will learn:

- how to get inspired with ideas for creative transitions

- how to teach creative transitions with clarity and skill

- the five movements of Prana

- how to use our knowledge of the flow of Prana to deviate from the common Vinyasa class template, building sequences that go beyond a general practice to safely approach more advanced postures

Week Two: From the Inside Out: Devotional Practices + Asana as Self-Expression

Arrival day is Monday December 3, departure day is Sunday December 9.

This module starts and ends with the heart. Together we'll delve into traditional bhakti practices like mantra, japa, chanting, and altar building to help us tap into our love for & commitment to life. We will ask what it means to approach the asana practice from the same space of devotion and appreciation, just as we would any other important relationship in our lives.  We will learn:

- how to define "advanced postures" and how to approach them with enthusiasm for the journey, not the form

- how to incorporate advanced postures into your regular classes / home practice and make them exciting instead of intimidating

- the why and the how of mantra, japa, chanting, and more

- simple techniques to infuse the spirit of bhakti into your everyday life - filling your days with joy, curiosity, and reverence
